Are You Keeping Up with your Health Account Balance?

By Justin “Bunk” DeVane

What is a Health Spending Account?

Think of it this way, each day you do many things that will either have a positive or negative effect on your health. So if we treat this as “health bucks”, you can look at your health as a savings account balance.

ARE YOU MAKING A DEPOSIT?

Everyday you can make a deposit into your health account.

  • If you eat a balanced diet, filled with vegetables, fruits, lean meats, nuts and seeds.

  • If you take time to prepare your meals and snacks to keep you in check.

  • If you exercise that day, another deposit is made.

  • If you sleep 6 to 8 hours a night, you make another deposit.

  • If you drink and hydrate your body, the account keeps growing.

Carrying out these daily habits will keep pushing your account to a more and more positive balance.

JUST LIKE MONEY- MAKE MORE AND SPEND LESS!

Life isn’t all good habits, no matter how much we try. You will go to birthday parties and eat cake, you will go out with friends and have drinks, or you're going to have a soda (GASP haha). So, it is important that you continue to put in enough positive deposits that these “negative spendings” will not take away from too much of your health account.

BUFFER YOUR ACCOUNT

Just like savings keep you from having a negative budget, building a positive budget helps create a buffer from losing your health. Occasionally life will happen with an injury or other diversion that will take a huge chunk out of your health account. So the more you buffer your account with positive deposits the better you can defend against these chunk negatives. Check out our blog post on the Sickness, Wellness, and Fitness continuum (here).
