Fight Against Chronic Disease- The Sickness-Wellness-Fitness Continuum

Updated: Apr 24

By Justin “Bunk” DeVane

In the United States, seven out of ten deaths are due to chronic diseases which include heart disease, Type 2 diabetes, stroke, cancer, and even drug addiction. The sad part is that the trend is not getting better. This is explained best by the number of individuals who now have two or more chronic diseases. According to the CDC, forty percent of adults in the United States suffer from two or more chronic diseases that is about 135 million people.

The crazy part is that most of these chronic diseases come down to four key lifestyle factors.

  1. Tobacco Use

  2. Poor Nutrition

  3. Lack of exercise

  4. Excessive alcohol use.

So what is the solution?

Artisan CrossFit has a unique solution that was taught to us by CrossFit Inc. The stimulus our workouts provide through varied high-intensity functional movements paired with a balanced diet of meats, veggies, nuts and seeds, with little starch or sugar can give us a pass on chronic disease. Using these two pillars we can get closer to what we call fitness and further away from sickness.

If our health is a continuum, we are in one of three points: sickness, wellness, or fitness.

The only way to move from one to the other is through periodical movements. One can choose better foods and exercise and push their continuum towards wellness and eventually fitness. On the other hand, one could sit at home eating processed foods high in sugar and other chemicals and see their continuum move towards sickness.

Our goal at Artisan is to use the knowledge we have gained to help you move towards fitness because we understand life happens. Whether it is a car accident, a viral pandemic, or a genetic predisposition, life can push your continuum without your control. However, the closer we are to the fitness point of the continuum the better prepared we are for these “setbacks”.

Former CEO Greg Glassman said it best, Doctors are like lifeguards and CrossFit trainers are like swim coaches. When you are sick (drowning), you don’t need a swim coach. You need to be taught how to swim before getting in the water (exercise and balanced diet).

Here at Artisan we strive to help you learn the skills to keep you from sickness.
